Best Scoring Defensemen in the NHL

Erik Karlsson's absence from the Ottawa Senators lineup and Kris Letang's presence in the Pittsburgh Penguins lineup point to the very same truth.

And that truth is this: The ability to provide offense from the blue line in hockey greatly increases a team's chances to win over the long run in the NHL. Possession in the offensive zone is augmented, a skilled shot from the point allows for rebound opportunities and, in many cases, those defensemen are very gifted at transitioning the puck from defense to offense.

Back to the two examples above, the Ottawa Senators will soon learn just how critical Karlsson is to that team's success, as they will not be able to play up to the level they did when he was in the lineup. The Penguins, having Letang healthy, practically roll out four forwards when No. 58 is on the ice—a huge benefit, especially on their lethal power play.

This story doesn't only apply in Ottawa and Pittsburgh; it's evident in all 30 markets.
