Washington Capitals left winger Alex Ovechkin scored his 500th career NHL goal Sunday in the second period of his team's game against the Ottawa Senators.
Ovechkin tied Lanny McDonald for 42nd on the NHL's all-time goal-scoring list, and later passed him with his second goal of the night.
Play was stopped so the home fans could honor the 30-year-old as they gave him a standing ovation:
He accomplished the feat in his 11th year in the league, all with the Capitals. The 10-time All-Star has had a storied career. After earning a spot on the All-Rookie Team following the 2005-06 season, he led the NHL in goals two years later with 65. He's done it four more times, including each of the past three years.
Only four players in NHL history have scored 500 goals faster than Ovechkin, per StatsCentre. His accomplishment may also help Washington fans forget their NFL team's Wild Card Round loss Sunday, as ESPN suggested:
