With some empty bleachers and an open court, Wesley Matthews shot after shot perfected his touch as the ball went through the net routinely. He knows he has to be always be prepared whenever coach Nate McMillan calls his name.
Wesley remembered how pick after pick teams left him unwanted in the 2009 draft. The Utah Jazz noticed him and signed him to a one year rookie deal.
Jerry Sloan knew that Matthews was special; he just only needs the time and opportunity to grow as a player.
Wesley never doubted himself and continued to work hard to earn him a starting job when the Jazz shooting guard Ronnie Brewer got traded. Life is not a bed of roses for Matthews—everything should be earned like his father, who went through different teams in his nine-year NBA career.
The Portland Trail Blazers pursued Wesley after the Jazz declined to match the offer. It was the culmination of his hard work when he was offered a five-year, $34 million contract. But Matthews will have to battle minutes with a team that has abundance of guards and one superstar, Brandon Roy.
