The Pelicans announced they waived Stephenson after The Vertical's Shams Charania, citing league sources, reported on Sunday that the Pelicans would do so in order to sign Archie Goodwin following Stephenson's injury.
ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported on Monday, "New Orleans didn't want to waive [Stephenson], but saw no alternative with 11 healthy players and no sure path to an injury exception."
Stein added, "The Pelicans, I'm told, have told [Stephenson] they will participate in his injury rehab in New Orleans or wherever he wishes to do it."
