Celtics vs. Knicks: Is Tonight’s Win for New York a Blessing or a Curse?

Going into the game tonight versus the Boston Celtics,the Knicks held the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race, behind the Boston Celtics for the Atlantic Division lead (fourth) and the Orlando Magic and Atlanta Hawks by four and a half games each. 

With the win tonight (over Boston), they climbed to within three and a half games of the Celtics for the division and within four games of the idle Hawks and Magic for the fifth and sixth seeds, respectively.

The day before the game against the Miami Heat this weekend, Mike Woodson stated, in a New York Newsday article, that the Knicks still wanted to win the division.  I like the fact that the Knicks had such a lofty goal prior to the season, but it is time for realism to set in.

It is mathematically possible for the Knicks to move up in the conference standings, but it may not be advantageous to try.  As it stands now, they would play Miami in the first round, and that would most likely result in not only a second consecutive first-round exit, but probably a quick one.
