1. New "What Works" Case
Study Released: Vodacom's
Community Services Phone Shops
The third in a series of "What
Works" case studies to be released, the Vodacom case
study focuses on the success of the Community Services model
of providing cellular telephony to underserved populations
in South Africa. The shared-access initiative has proven not
only profitable for Vodacom but for thousands of entrepreneur-owners
of local phone shops while providing low-cost telephone access
to low-income rural and urban residents.

Digital Dividend Clearinghouse: Digital Diaspora Network,
Latin America and Caribbean (DDN-LAC), ThaiTambon.com E-Commerce
Initiative, Intel Computer Clubhouse, Ramallah, West Bank
Seven new projects have been added to the Clearinghouse

to Europe and the United States to help develop the technological
and entrepreneurial resources of their home countries.
ThaiTambon.com E-Commerce Initiative
ThaiTambon.com is Thailand's highly successful marketing program
for products from local villages (called tambons). The project
began in 1999 as a way to encourage the rural population to
use the Internet. The goals of the project include the development
of e-governance initiatives, e-commerce and local production,
and the promotion of tourism through online means.
Intel
Computer Clubhouse, Ramallah, West Bank
The Intel Corporation, the International Youth Foundation
(IYF), and the Welfare Association (WA), a Palestinian non-profit
foundation, have launched a new Intel Computer Clubhouse in
Ramallah, West Bank. The Intel Computer Clubhouse is an after-school
program that provides youth, ages 10 to 18, access to high-tech
equipment, professional software, and adult mentors to help
them develop the self-confidence and enthusiasm for learning.
