in New Series of "Quick Look" Case Studies
Released today, "ITC Ltd's e-Choupals: Backward Integration
as a Forward-Looking Strategy for India's Rural Markets" describes
Indian conglomerate ITC Ltd's efforts to increase shareholder
value and social good at the same time, through a network
of Internet access points reaching over a million farmers
in 9,000 villages. The "win-win" business model helps ensure
its sustainability, while also making it highly scalable.

Clearinghouse: Projects from the Media Lab Asia
Ten new projects have been added to the Clearinghouse since
our last edition of the Digest. Among them are four new initiatives
from Media Lab Asia:
Infothela: The Infothela is a pedal-driven,
Internet-connected computer on wheels for use in India's villages.

Infothela Medical Applications:
Researchers are designing applications to be used with the
Infothela to improve health standards in rural India. Learn

Community Access to Sustainable Health
(Ca:sh): The Ca:sh project is using handheld computers
to track disease and improve maternal and child health in
rural India. Learn more 
Digital Gangetic Plains: The project
is demonstrating the applicability of 802.11b to rural connectivity
by installing wireless access points in the Kanpur-Lucknow
corridor. Learn more 
*Media Lab Asia is the world's largest academic research program
dedicated to bringing the benefits of new technologies to
the millions of people across Asia, Africa, and Latin America
who require them most. Other MLA projects already in the Clearinghouse
include Digital Mandi, HISAAB, Sustainable Access in Rural
India (SARI), Baatchit, GramChitra, and DakNet.
