1. Happy Birthday!
The Clearinghouse is one year old this month! Over the past
year, we've more than doubled in size, improved our functionality,
featured a dozen project spotlights, and facilitated networking
for partners, funding, and sources of pro bono assistance.
As we look forward to the year ahead, we'd like to say "Thank
You!" to all those who have helped us grow!

2. New in the Digital Dividend
Clearinghouse: Safe Send (U.S. and Mexico); c2it (Global)
13 new projects have been added to the Clearinghouse since
our last edition of the Digest. Among the highlights are two
new, low-cost ways of sending money to family in developing
countries...
Immigrants living in the U.S. sending money to families back
home in Mexico have typically faced service charges of up
to 20% on even the smallest wire transfers--charges high enough
to lead them to choose other, riskier methods. With Safe
Send, they can deposit up to $1000 in accounts over
the Internet or by phone with no annual fee or minimum balance
required. Then, for $3 a transaction, their families can withdraw
money directly from those accounts at any one of 20,000 Bank
of America tellers in Mexico. Read

Citibank's c2it ATM-remittance service
also offers immigrants a low-cost method of transferring money
back home. However, with c2it, the sender doesn't even need
a Citibank account--all that is needed to use the service
is an e-mail address. c2it also allows transfers to over 120
countries in the world. Read

3. Meet Our Newest Partner!
Technology Empowerment Network (TEN)
Technology Empowerment Network (TEN)'s purpose is to identify,
support and empower projects that improve quality of life
in underserved communities around the world. Its high-level
members offer their time, insight and expertise--rather than
money--to bring information technology to participating schools,
businesses and NGOs. Like the Clearinghouse, TEN also fosters
knowledge-sharing among projects who might otherwise never
come in contact. Clearinghouse projects that have already
benefited from participation in TEN include Nairobits, the
Jhai Foundation, Greenstar, TARAhaat, and Manguzi Wireless
Internet.
TEN is currently looking for a small group of new projects
to join its network in 2003. The only criteria are that projects
be past the start-up phase, ready to go to the next level,
and likely to benefit from the kinds of resources TEN's members
bring to bear. Highly open, responsive projects are the ones
that get the most out of their relationships with TEN.

Work For You! Alert Box
At more than 650 and growing, keeping up with new projects
entered in the Clearinghouse can seem like a challenge. Fortunately,
the Alert Box makes this job easy for registered users! The
Alert Box allows you to select the types of projects that
are most interesting to you--then, as new ones are added,
the Alert Box builds a custom list right there on your personal
Desktop.
Don't visit the Clearinghouse every day? You can also have
these notifications sent to you by e-mail (note that if a
new project falls into more than one of the categories you
select, you will be notified more than once!)
