1. Just Announced!
The
Digital Dividend Project Clearinghouse has been named
a finalist in the Stockholm
Challenge. This year, about 600 projects from 78 countries
participated in the Challenge.
2. Funding Opportunities
APC Africa Hafkin Prize in 2002
APC (The Association for Progressive Communications) is accepting
nominations for the
Hafkin Prize until Sep 15, 2002. This year's theme is
"People-Centred Information and Communications Technology
(ICT) Policy in Africa."
Call for Proposals: Community Information
Systems
The
Evergreen State College is looking for communities that
can work together with students in its "Community Information
Systems" program for 9 months starting in late September.
They are planning to work with 8 - 15 communities in the Pacific
Northwest, Europe, Africa, Asia and other regions.
APDIP ICT R&D Grants Program
APDIP is accepting applications until July 15, 2002, for its
R&D
Grants Program. Small grants of up to US$9,000 and project
grants of up to US$30,000 each will be awarded on a competitive
basis to successful institutions from the Asia-Pacific region.
The Grants Program is expected to foster local entrepreneurship,
build research capacities, and accelerate the use of ICT for
development in the region.
3. New "What Works" Business
Case Studies Just Released: Is Locally-Relevant Content the
Key to IT Business Success in Poor Communities?
Many community telecenters go broke when external funding
dries up. Western-style cyber-cafés typically must price their
services beyond the means of poor communities. Is there a
middle ground--are there viable business models for providing
affordable connectivity and IT services to poor communities?
Two of Digital Dividend's"What Works" case studies released
today suggest that the answer is yes, and point to local content
as a critical factor.

4. From the Digital Dividend
Clearinghouse: New Keyword Search Feature Added
Already know the name of the project you're looking for? Ever
wish you could search project summaries, not just categories?
We've implemented a new keyword search feature to make searching
for projects in the Digital Dividend Clearinghouse quicker
and easier.
Just type in a word or phrase associated with the project
you're looking for, and hit "Go!" The Clearinghouse will search
for project summaries containing your word or phrase. Try
it!
5. Discussion Spotlight "World
Summit of the Information Society" by Thomas Ruddy
Broad representation of civil society is necessary at the
World
Summit of the Information Society, Geneva, Switzerland,
2003. What issues should receive the most attention? How will
the summit affect IT in developing countries? What do you
think?
