As we get ready to jump into 2011, the NBA sits about six months away from a potential doomsday scenario, also known as a lockout.

In other words, enjoy the NBA action while you can, folks.

While the NBA world recovers from the Miami Heat plastering the Los Angeles Lakers in L.A. on Christmas Day, it’s time to look ahead and see what lies in store for NBA fans in 2011. After all, no NBA champions were crowned on Christmas Day.

So, without further adieu, let’s take a look at where Carmelo Anthony will end up by February 24, and 20 other bold predictions for the NBA in 2011.

(And remember, these are bold predictions. As in, not the most likely scenario. Remember that while you’re yelling at me about why I don’t have the Miami Heat as 2011 NBA champs.)

Begin Slideshow

On Friday night, Kevin Love became the first NBA player in 28 years to score 30-plus points and gather 30-plus rebounds in the same game, with his 31-point, 31-rebound effort against the New York Knicks.

The last player to come up with a 30-30 night? Moses Malone, all the way back in 1982. And no NBA player had gathered 30 rebounds in a night since Charles Barkley did in 1996.

So, yeah, Love had a pretty solid game, to say the least.

Sure, we can chalk up part of Love's breakout game to his opponent. I don't think anyone has ever accused Mike D'Antoni, the Knicks coach, or Amar'e Stoudemire, the current Knicks starting center, of being too preoccupied with defense.

But obviously not every player who faces the Knicks pulls down 31 rebounds in a given night. Love's defensive intensity and true passion for rebounding played a huge factor in his monster game, too.

Ironically, Love wrote a blog post for GQ this week about his perspective on rebounding: "For me, rebounding is all a mindset.

In an interview that aired on CNN Wednesday night, CNN correspondent Soledad O'Brien asked LeBron James if race played a factor in the massive backlash he received this summer after The Decision.

"I think so at times," James said. "It's always, you know, a race factor."

James is doing an awfully good job impersonating Jesse Jackson here, but he couldn't be more off base with his accusations about race.

All you need is one long look at LeBron's plummeting Q rating to understand that America, quite frankly, is pissed off at the King. And it's not because he's black.

Otherwise, why would Kevin Durant—a player who's no less black than LeBron—be seen as the NBA's newest savior? Shouldn't Kevin Love—the only white member of Team USA this summer—be the NBA's next big thing, by that logic?

Something tells me Durant isn't too worried about Love surpassing him.

Nevertheless, James' manager, Maverick Carter—you may better remember Carter as the marketing genius behind the The Decision—couldn't help but jump into the racial discourse during Wednesday's interview.

"[Race] definitely played a role in some of the stuff coming out of the media, things that were written for sure," said Carter.

Seeing as Carter was primarily responsible for the single worst P.R. move of the past decade, it's hard not to take everything he says with a grain of salt, don’t you think? Could we have some examples of the "things that were written," Mr. Carter?

No, LeBron, America isn't lashing out at you because you're black. Believe it or not, we even have a black president now! (Or are you going on TV next week to say that America's disillusionment with President Obama has adversely affected you and all other black celebrities?)

America isn't even lashing out at you because you left Cleveland. Sure, your name may have replaced Voldemort's as "He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named" in Ohio. But the majority of the sensible, sports-watching public understands that, as a free agent, you had the right to leave Cleveland.

LeBron, America lashed out at you because of the way you left Cleveland, not because you left.

Going on TV and taking a tinkle on your hometown by unabashedly announcing that you'd be taking your talents to South Beach—that was the real nail in the "Let's Get America to Hate Me" coffin.

This one sentence, written by Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski, sums up the general thought process going around the NBA world on July 8, hours before The Decision: "The TV event had delivered hope to the Cavaliers that they would keep James because they never believed he would go on air and open himself to such a visceral reaction."

I remember waking up on July 8, reading a report on ESPN titled, "Source: LeBron James to choose Miami Heat," and being absolutely stunned. I wasn't the only one.

Twitter was melting down from LBJ conspiracy theories, ranging from "his handlers planted this as an intentional lie" to "oh my God, he really is detached enough from the world to break up with Cleveland on live, national TV?"

Apparently, according to Wojnarowski, LeBron had "several friends" tell him not to go through with The Decision, saying it would be a "public-relations disaster for him." You didn't need Miss Cleo to see through that crystal ball.

"James didn’t seem to agree, didn’t think it made a difference," Wojnarowski wrote. "Mad was mad, he thought. He would take a beating, but it would subside and people would love him again in Cleveland."

It's that hubris that cost LeBron James America's affection.

See, when Kevin Durant talks about hard work and humility, it's believable. When LBJ says that his free agency process "humbled" him, you want to laugh in his face.

How do you humble a guy who hasn't been told "no" in almost 10 years? Humility isn't about having everyone tell you how great you are all the time.

This is nothing against LeBron James, the basketball player. In my estimation, on the court, LBJ is the single most terrifying force in the NBA. He's the most talented player currently playing. He can affect every single aspect of a coach's gameplan.

LeBron James, the basketball player, has earned the adulation that was draped upon him before that fateful night in July.

But by taking to the airwaves and breaking up with Cleveland, LeBron quickly learned that not even he is immune to the occasional public uproar. (Didn't the Tiger Woods scandal teach these sports superstars anything?)

And instead of owning up to his mistakes—instead of saying, "You know what? I made a poor decision by announcing my decision on national TV that way"—LeBron resorted to the race card.

With talks of the reported four-team trade to send Carmelo Anthony to the Nets now disintegrating, it appears that the market for Melo is wide open once again.

There are few certainties with the Melo situation, but here's one: If he's still reluctant to stay in Denver long-term by the February trade deadline, he's outta there. The Nuggets just bore witness to the Cavaliers and Raptors being stripped bare this past summer, and they want no part of that.

They're getting something for their franchise superstar, and it's going to be more than future draft picks.

Now, as the Nets-Bobcats-Jazz-Nuggets deal was being batted around last week, a few dark horses emerged in the Melo race, including the Philadelphia 76ers. The Nuggets are reported to be extremely fond of Andre Iguodala, with his name repeatedly coming up in trade talks regarding Melo.

The only problem is: Melo isn't so hot on Philly.

According to a recent report from the Philadelphia Daily News, Anthony would not sign a contract extension in Philadelphia. Given that he's currently on the last year of his current contract, you'd have to think that might become a sticking point for Philly before signing on the dotted line.

There haven't been any concrete reports about what the Sixers would be offering Denver for Anthony, but the Nuggets have insisted on some combination of young talent and draft picks in exchange for their superstar. Seeing as a straight Melo-for-Iggy swap wouldn't work under current CBA rules, Philly would likely have to throw in another ancillary player and future draft considerations to land Anthony.

If Anthony would agree to an extension in Philly, I'm guessing you'd be hard-pressed to find a Philly fan who wouldn't be willing to explore a trade based around Melo and Iggy. Throw in Thaddeus Young, throw in Lou Williams, throw in draft picks, we won't care; we'll have a superstar like we haven't had since the early-2000s version of Allen Iverson.

Melo may not be a top-five player in the NBA, and may be jacking up shots at a surprisingly low efficiency rate, but he's still a guy that brings any team instant credibility. With Evan Turner and Jrue Holiday by his side, the Sixers would suddenly be favorites for one of the Eastern Conference's final few playoff spots.

But what happens for Philly if Melo won't accept an extension? Should they still consider the deal?

According to the most recent reports, Melo's unwillingness to sign an extension is a trade non-starter in Philly's eyes. That doesn't necessarily make it the right call, though.

Let's briefly explore both sides of the argument.

Why the Sixers Should Trade Iggy for Melo

If the Sixers end up trading for Melo without an extension, they'd have to be able to stomach the possibility of losing Anthony for nothing at the end of the year.

In effect, they'd have to be willing to trade Iguodala for a one-year return and nothing more.

Most teams wouldn't be so hot on trading away their No. 1 player for a one-year rental, especially if those teams had absolutely zero championship aspirations in the coming season.

Then again, we can't forget that Melo's departure would free up nearly $20 million in cap space for Philly—cap space that won't otherwise exist if the Sixers decide to keep Iguodala instead.

While the free agent class of 2011 doesn't boast the A-list superstars that 2010's summer of LeBron did, a main course of Yao Ming along with a side of Tony Parker isn't a bad place to start.

Then, consider that the players in the draft class of 2007 will become restricted free agents at the end of this year if they don't sign extensions by October 31. That means guys like Joakim Noah and Jeff Green could be hitting the auction block (assuming the NBA isn't locked out), with a team like the Sixers suddenly looking to replace a superstar in Anthony with his nearly $20 million of cap space burning a hole in their pockets.

And keep in mind, free agency in 2011 won't start until the owners and players' union hammers out a new CBA.

The owners don't want to keep paying players absurd amounts of guaranteed money. Contracts are virtually guaranteed to shrink under the next CBA. And the Sixers would have money to pounce.

Suddenly, the Sixers have serious potential in this situation. Either:

A. Melo comes to Philly, loves it, inks an extension, and becomes the biggest Philly superstar since Iverson; or

B. Melo comes to Philly, rocks the city for a year, leaves, opens cap space, and the Sixers can overspend like drunks.

If you're of the opinion that the Evan Turner/Iguodala combo will never succeed, or that a championship team can't be paying a second (or third?) banana $14 million/year, then there's a truly legitimate argument for jettisoning Iggy. Given his dominant defensive performances with Team USA this summer, Iguodala's trade stock may never be higher.

Why the Sixers Should Only Trade for Melo If He'll Sign

This seems pretty logical, right? A team gives up its best player (Iguodala) and, in return, would expect more than a year of services from the player it traded for (Anthony)?

If Melo would willingly sign an extension, this deal quickly shifts to the "no-brainer" side. But, seeing as there are absolutely zero indications that he'll do so, we're left with the above question.

And the answer is yes, the Sixers should expect more out of an Iguodala trade than one year out of Anthony.

It's the same reason I wanted to tear out my hair when Iggy's name started floating in Tracy McGrady trade rumors this past season: You don't trade away your best player for an expiring contract/cap space.

Would the Cavaliers have wanted to trade LeBron James to Houston for T-Mac this past year, had they known that LBJ was planning on leaving? I'm gonna guess no.

The same should apply for the Sixers. If they're convinced that Iguodala and Turner could never mesh, they should be shopping Iggy on the open market and seeing what other offers they could find.

By readily accepting a deal for Carmelo, they'd essentially be committing themselves to a yearlong sales pitch on why Melo should sign with the Sixers long-term.

The only problem is, their message may already be falling upon deaf ears. In which case, they'll have given up Iguodala, their best player, for one year of Carmelo Anthony. That's a tough sales pitch to anyone involved with the team.

Conclusion

The bottom line is that the Sixers can't be expected to trade Iguodala, draft picks, and other young players for Anthony if he won't sign an extension. No franchise would mortgage their future like that for one year, especially when they're not in championship contention.

If the Nuggets insist on receiving multiple first-round draft picks despite Melo refusing an extension in Philly, that should be a non-starter for the Sixers.

But if the Sixers could somehow coerce the Nuggets into taking Iguodala and another player (Lou Williams?) for an extension-less Melo, Philadelphia would have to consider the deal.

The potential for accelerating the rebuilding process by ditching Iggy's contract is too great to ignore. Having nearly $20 million freed up by Melo in 2011 (plus Kapono's $6 million), Andres Nocioni's $7.5 million/year contract expiring in 2012, and the albatross that is Elton Brand's $16 million/year contract ending in 2013, the Sixers would have plenty of flexibility in the coming seasons to continue building around Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner.

Read more NBA news on BleacherReport.com

If you ask some Minnesota Timberwolves fans, one of the greatest mysteries in the NBA is the media's seemingly strange and sick fascination with making fun of the T'Wolves general manager, the one and only David Kahn.

ESPN's Bill Simmons may be leading the charge of the Sportswriters-Against-Kahn movement, but many (myself included) have happily followed along.

Why have we adopted Kahn as our mutual whipping boy? Is it because we were all bullied as kids and this is how we're getting our pent-up rage out?

Nope. After all, we're not local cops. We're simply sportswriters and bloggers.

No, instead, we've all been mocking Kahn because, well…quite simply, he brings it upon himself. And if his recent personal letter to Timberwolves fans doesn't convince you, nothing will.

The first signs of true trouble with Kahn came in the 2009 draft, where he drafted PG Ricky Rubio with the No. 5 overall pick…and immediately turned around and drafted PG Jonny Flynn with the No. 6 overall pick. Rubio didn't play a single minute in the NBA last year, isn't going to play in the NBA this coming year, and could very well face an NBA lockout next year.

I'm pretty sure you could ask someone who's never watched the NBA if it's a good idea to draft two players of the same position back-to-back, and I'd bet they'd know the answer is a resounding "no."

Amazingly, even the forced exile of Rubio doesn't compare to Kahn's antics this summer.

Kahn made headlines back in July by calling Darko Milicic (the No. 2 pick from 2003, widely regarded as a massive bust throughout the league) "manna from heaven." He also compared Milicic's passing ability to that of Vlade Divac, one of the best big man passers in NBA history.

Do yourself a favor and watch the full five-minute trainwreck. It's on par with Arizona governor Jan Brewer's recent interview disaster, and that says something.

Around that same time, AOL FanHouse's Tom Ziller created a cheat sheet to Kahn's tenure as GM that should depress anyone who's ever cheered for the Timberwolves.

After examining each of Kahn's draft picks, trades, and free agency transactions, Ziller concludes that an inanimate object (he suggests an avocado) could have been running the Timberwolves better than Kahn these past few years. The sad part is that it's hard to argue with him.

And basketball-wise, Kahn did himself no favors this summer. I mean, really, who wouldn't trade away a guy two years removed from a 24-10 season (Al Jefferson) for Kosta Koufos and two protected future first-round draft picks?

Things didn't get much better when his theoretical Jefferson replacement, Kevin Love, spoke out in a Sports Illustrated interview in late August. "I hope we have a plan. I don't know what it is at this point," Love told SI writer Paul Forrester.

Yowch.

But, beyond the manna-from-heaven interview, Kahn had largely spared T'Wolves fans of too much public embarrassment, instead deciding to break their hearts behind closed doors.

Then, Kahn decided to take out a full-page ad in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, previewing what this season would hold for Minnesota fans.

Timberwolves, meet bus. Prepare to get thrown under bus.

Kahn cuts to the point quickly:

"We now have more shooting, athleticism, and depth at every position, which will make us a better team this season. So will we challenge for the NBA championship this year? Not likely."

Ah. Well, then. Bet those T'Wolves season ticket holders just got that much more excited. Now, I'm not a general manager, but wouldn't it seem to be good business practice to not take a dump on your team's hopes a month before the season can even start? (Let's be honest, your players will likely do a good enough job of that on their own this season.)

In the letter Kahn's quick to follow with:

"Ouch.

Out of all the surprises with Team USA this summer, the sight of Andre Iguodala as Team USA's go-to defensive stopper had to be one of the most shocking to casual Sixers fans.

Iggy's been an above-average on-ball stopper for Philly for years, but no one was ready to compare him to 2005 Ron Artest any time soon.

Having just watched Iguodala harass Lithuania's leading scorer, Linas Kleiza, into a 1-of-11 shooting performance in the semifinals of the FIBA World Championships, I'm wondering how Iggy's defensive abilities have stayed under-the-radar for this long.

Regardless, Sixers fans can't assume that Iggy's performance at the World Championships will necessarily carry over to the NBA. As Kleiza and Luis Scola proved in this tournament, a superstar in FIBA play may only translate into a role player in the NBA.

If Iguodala does return stateside with his new defensive mentality, it'd only help the Sixers in the coming years. With the Sixers having just added Evan Turner with the No. 2 pick in the 2010 draft, Philly finally has a franchise cornerstone that will eventually be expected to shoulder the load offensively.

In other words, Iguodala doesn't have to be the No. 1 option on offense anymore.

No more bail-out, off-balance 28-foot jumpers. We'll leave that to the guys on the team who can actually sink those shots.

But what does Iguodala think about his own performance in the FIBA tournament, and how that'll transfer back to the NBA?

For his part, Iguodala acknowledges that he's playing a different role for Team USA than he does for the Sixers in his "Dre Diary" on philly.com:

"I know people back in Philly are looking at my offensive numbers and don't think that I'm playing that well, but that's not my role on this team. I am here to play defense, score out on the break, get some put-backs. That's how I'll score on this team.

The other guys on the team have to fill in where needed. If there are some nights that certain guys aren't scoring, then someone else will. If we need more rebounding on a certain night, then some guys can concentrate on that. Scoring hasn't been something that's needed from me so far on this team and we're winning so that's all that matters. It doesn't bother me at all not to be scoring a lot. I'll do whatever I have to do in order to win the gold medal.

I know my role in Philadelphia is different, and I'll have my time at training camp to get used to that role again. It won't be a problem for me to pick up that role again."

Am I the only one sitting here thinking, "Your role doesn't need to be different in Philadelphia, Andre?"

It's not like Iguodala should just stop shooting altogether, but if he stopped shooting three-pointers altogether, I wouldn't complain, given that he shot 31 percent from downtown this past season.

What should be most encouraging to Sixers fans is new coach Doug Collins, who's been one step ahead of the public in terms of Iguodala. For instance, back at his introductory press conference on May 24, Collins said:

"To me, if he's an all-league defender at that three spot, that means we're going to be able to get out and run and that's what we do best. I want him to use his jumper as a weapon, but I don't want him to have to live with jump shots because then he's not playing to his strengths."

What's this, Coach Collins? You realize Iguodala's the best defender on the team and should rightly assert himself as such?

And you want to actually run the fast break, much like Team USA's run-and-pressure system? Weird. (Sorry, I'm still stuck in the Eddie Jordan let's-grind-everything-to-a-halt-every-night offense.)

Collins also has gone on record this summer saying that he wants Iggy to take 100 more free throws next year and 100 less three-pointers; Iguodala called that "common sense."

So, has Iguodala's Team USA experience brought him the maturation as a basketball player to finally become confident in his strengths (rebounding, defense, ball movement) and weaknesses (shooting, shooting, and shooting)?

The way he's been playing in Turkey, we'd be led to believe so. Then again, with his quote about "his role being different in Philly," it sounds like Iguodala's ready to shoulder more of the scoring load for his NBA team than he's asked to do for Team USA.

Luckily, given Collins' soundbites this summer, he sounds like he's got the right ideas when it comes to Iguodala's development. If Collins can convince Iguodala to emulate his Team USA role with the Sixers—playing tenacious, in-your-face defense, running the floor well, and converting on easy offensive opportunities—Iguodala could become a dream No. 2 option to the versatile Turner.

All of Philadelphia should have their fingers crossed that Iguodala doesn't forget the lessons he's learned over in Turkey with Team USA. The Sixers' season likely depends on it.

Read more NBA news on BleacherReport.com
