Private sector initiatives to close the digital divide were announced at the G-8 Summit. The Digital Opportunity Taskforce, a coordinated global strategy to implement these initiatives, is bringing together the efforts of governments, multilateral organizations, the private sector, and civil society. It builds on the willingness of the private sector to share technology, the willingness of developing countries to create the policy framework and enabling conditions for their citizens to benefit from the digital opportunity, and the willingness of multilateral institutions and civil society to act as catalysts and guarantors in this process. Senior policy leaders representing each sector will report briefly on actions underway, explain how companies can participate, and engage in a high-level forum on next steps for the coordinated action agenda.
